. a two horse battle on super tuesday as mitt romney and rick santorum pick up key campaign victories. at this minute, the biggest prize, the battle for ohio, is still too close to call. at this point mitt romney wins virginia vermont and massachusetts, the state he was once governor. santorum wins tennessee and north dakota. and newt gingrich wins his home state of georgia. rebecca cooper is live in our newsroom with the latest. a cliffhanger. >> it is. usually by this time of night on super tuesday, we would have a pretty good idea of who would win the nomination, but not today, not in this unpredictable primary. we knew it would be close in ohio, and it is. the polls close at 7:30. it is still too close to call. the latest numbers are from hamilton county. those numbers seem to have boosted mitt romney to a slight lead but those are unofficial numbers. right now the official tally shows rick santorum slightly ahead, 38-37. we will keep a close eye on the numbers, as will the candidates. well ohio is the most closely watched, tennessee was also considered a big prize. mitt romney wa

and this could be romney's best opportunity to break away from his republican rivals. >> during this campaign there's been discussion about all sorts of issues, but i keep bringing it back to more jobs, less debt, and smaller government. >> reporter: romney seeing a bit of a surge here. a new poll from quinnipiac has him up three points over santorum. that's within the margin of error but it's a dramatic ten-point swing for romney in just a week. romney may be getting closer to the nomination, but there are troubling signs for his campaign down the road. a new poll found that just 28% of voters have a favorable view of him. among independents it's even worse 2:002%. even if rick santorum and newt gingrich pix pick up a few wins today, romney will likely emerge as the overall winner in that critical race for delegates. on the eve of super tuesday santorum made a plea to ohio voters. >> don't listen to the polls. don't listen to all the media hype. >> reporter: ohio voters are very familiar with the political spotlight, and today should be no different. a win for rick santorum kee
the courts. >> rick santorum picks up a big win in louisiana. mitt romney still has a commanding lead. what is the reasoning behind santorum and gingrich staying in this race? >> the louisiana outcome was a situation and which santorum wins but he only gets a portion of the delegates. he has not made a dent in mitt romney's delegate count. the process will continue to be that way for some time. what he is hoping to do is to put pressure on mitt romney to win more and more delegates. they are trying to pick away what they can said that it is more difficult for mitt romney to amass 1100 delegates that he means to seal the deal. they are hoping they can take this all the way to the convention in tampa. >> we will see what happens. thank you for being with us. the fifth annual global initiative kicks off in d.c. on friday. among the speakers president clinton, chelsea clinton and jon stewart. tomorrow, michelle obama will welcome schoolchildren to the white house garden. it will be the first annual spring planting as part of her initiative to help students get healthier. the first lady planted
, illinois. a win there tonight will put mitt romney one step closer to wrapping up the nomination. and abc's jake tapper did the math on what that victory would cost. >> reporter: while we're waiting for official results in illinois, we'll take a look at his journey on the nomination by the numbers. >> killing time before the illinois primary returns come in, mitt romney participated in a google-plus hangout this afternoon. >> i'm going to do everything i can to bring people together to accomplish what has to be done. >> so how close is romney to winning the nomination? let's do a search of our own. not even halfway there. romney has won 521 delegates out of a total 1,144 needed to win. we still need 623 more delegates. there are still 24 states and more than 1,200 delegates left outstanding. romney has to win 47% of them. santorum has to win 67%. >> what has cost romney so far? financially romney and his allies have spent $45 million. that's $12.40 per vote. by contrast, santorum and his allies have spent $3 per vote, a relative bargain. let's look at the political cost. how negative have
